The section on educational options could be improved. The statement about Least Restrictive Environment comes across as a little biased against inclusion in traditional education settings. While yes, LRE is mandated by IDEA, there is also scientific literature to support inclusion with necessary supports as not only beneficial for students with disabilities, but also for their typically developing same aged peers. Oftentimes inclusion is not implemented properly and without necessary supports and education to the teachers and staff. Failure of public school districts to provide necessary supports and services is often financially driven, and unfortunately district personnel are uneducated as to what is required under the law. While every child is unique and may not fit all educational placements, it is often this failure of public schools that leads to failure of inclusion in the LRE. I have witnessed this first hand as not only a parent of two children with special needs, but also as an active member in local and national disability organizations, and a professional in the field.
