How many CE hours do Michigan advanced practice registered nurses need?

Michigan APRNs must complete 25 hours of continuing education every two years to renew their underlying RN license. Renewal falls on the anniversary of the RN license’s original issue date. No more than 12 of the 25 hours can be earned within any single 24-hour period, and none of the 25 hours need to be live or in person ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10601 ; R. 338.10602 ).

Michigan recognizes four advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) specialty certifications — Nurse Practitioner (NP), Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), and Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) — each requiring an active Michigan RN license and renewing on the same two-year cycle ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10405b (NP); R. 338.10405a (CNM); R. 338.10405 (CRNA); R. 338.10405c (CNS)).

Beyond that RN-level requirement, each APRN certification itself is renewed separately, most commonly by submitting proof of current, active national certification from a Board-recognized certifying body in that specific role. Two roles also have their own certification-specific continuing education alternative to national certification, described below — the Board otherwise sets no additional continuing-education-hour count for the certification itself.

Which CE topics are required for Michigan advanced practice registered nurses?

The 25-hour requirement that keeps your underlying RN license active includes the same two mandated topics every Michigan RN completes: 2 hours of pain and symptom management, required every renewal, and implicit bias training at a rate of 1 hour per year of the two-year cycle, for 2 hours total, counted within the 25-hour total rather than added to it ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10601 ; R. 338.7004 ). A one-time human trafficking identification training, with no state-set hour minimum, is also required before renewing and is treated as separate from continuing education entirely ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10105 ).

For the APRN certification itself, Michigan's default renewal condition is current, active national certification, with a certification-specific continuing-education alternative available to two of the four roles:

Nurse Practitioners

maintain current national certification in their population focus — including Adult-Gerontology, Family, Pediatric, Women's Health/Gender-Related, Psychiatric-Mental Health, and other Board-recognized foci — from a recognized certifying body such as ANCC, PNCB, NCC, AANP, ONCC, or AACN. A Nurse Practitioner who obtained Michigan board certification before 1991 may instead renew by completing 40 continuing education hours in the nursing specialty field within the 2-year period before the application ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10405b ). Psychiatric-Mental Health was added as a credentialed Nurse Practitioner population focus in 2025 ( R. 338.10404b ).

Certified Nurse Midwives maintain current national certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board, with no certification-specific continuing-education alternative to it ( R. 338.10405a ).

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists maintain current national certification from the National Board on Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists, with no certification-specific continuing-education alternative to it ( R. 338.10405 ).

Clinical Nurse Specialists maintain current national certification from ANCC or AACN in their specialty. A Clinical Nurse Specialist who does not hold national certification may instead renew by completing continuing education for their role and population focus consistent with ANCC's or AACN's own recertification standards for the 2-year period before the application ( R. 338.10405c ).

Practicing on an expired national certification, with no qualifying continuing-education alternative on file, is prohibited for every one of the four roles.

Do newly licensed Michigan advanced practice registered nurses need CE for their first renewal?

Yes, if your underlying RN license was first issued on or after May 8, 2024. Michigan ended its earlier first-renewal exemption effective that date, so a newly certified APRN completes the full 25-hour requirement, including pain and symptom management and implicit bias training, at their first renewal, the same as at every later one ( Michigan LARA, Nursing Licensing Guide and FAQs ). For APRN specialty certification, a newly certified APRN must hold current national certification (or, for an eligible Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist, meet that role's continuing-education alternative) from the outset, and that requirement applies at every renewal, including the first.

Does the Michigan Board of Nursing use CE Broker to audit APRN CE records?

Yes. The Board conducts a random audit after each renewal period, selecting a percentage of licensees who renewed to verify their continuing education ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10601 ). The Board does not publish its audit selection rate. All audited nurses will need to report proof of CE compliance through the Michigan official CE tracking tool, CE Broker.

Keep your certificates and other proof of completion. You do not submit them with your renewal application unless selected for audit. Keep your general CE records for at least four years, and keep proof of your one-time human trafficking training and your implicit bias training for six years, the retention period the implicit bias rule specifically sets ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.7004 ). For APRN specialty certification, the Board requires evidence of compliance — national certification or, where it applies, the continuing-education alternative — to be maintained for 4 years after the renewal application and submitted for audit on request.
