General Hours
23 General Hours
Required Courses
2 hours of Pain & Symptom Management each cycle.
Implicit Bias Training – 1 hour for each year of the license cycle (typically 2 hrs per biennium).
One-time Human-Trafficking Training (must be completed before the first renewal if not already done).
One-time Opioid & Controlled-Substance Awareness Training required only if the APRN also holds a Michigan controlled-substance license.
Additional information
Michigan APRN Standard Renewal Requirements: Michigan APRNs must renew their license every two years by March 31. Each renewal cycle requires completing 25 contact hours of continuing education relevant to nursing practice, including at least 2 hours in pain and symptom management . APRNs must also complete a one-time human trafficking training and fulfill implicit bias training requirements as specified by the Board. Nurses are responsible for maintaining their Continuing Education records for possible audit ( Michigan Board of Nursing ).

First-time renewal: APRNs initially licensed on or after May 8, 2024, must complete all CE requirements including implicit bias training before their first renewal ( Michigan Board of Nursing ).

Certification alternative: Specialty certifications may fulfill some CE credit requirements, but all APRNs need to meet the CE hours and training mandates set by the Board ( Michigan Board of Nursing ).

Other Certifications that nurses hold that needs to be renewed: APRNs must maintain any additional specialty or advanced certifications independently from their state license renewal requirements.
