How many CE hours do Iowa physicians need?
Iowa physicians need 40 hours of Category 1 continuing medical education every two years for a standard permanent or administrative medicine license. No topic-specific mandate applies to every physician, so all 40 hours are General Hours unless a physician's practice triggers one of the conditional requirements below ( Iowa Admin. Code 481—654.3(1)"a" ). You may complete all 40 hours online with an on-demand Complete Iowa CME Physician Package
Up to 20 hours of Category 1 credit may be carried over from the prior renewal period ( Iowa Admin. Code 481—654.2 ). A physician can also satisfy the full 40-hour requirement through participation in an approved resident training program, or through board certification or recertification with an ABMS or AOA specialty board, each treated as equivalent to the full 40 hours ( Iowa Admin. Code 481—654.2 ).
Renewal runs on a birth month cycle: a physician's license expires on the first day of the licensee's birth month, renewing every two years ( Iowa Admin. Code 481—652.10, 481—652.12(3) ).
Which CE topics are required for Iowa physicians?
No topic is required of every Iowa physician. Several conditional mandates apply instead, based on practice type.
A physician who regularly provides primary health care to children must complete 2 hours on identifying and reporting child abuse every three years, and a physician who regularly provides primary health care to adults must complete a separate 2 hours on identifying and reporting dependent adult abuse every three years, each using Department-approved training ( Iowa Admin. Code 481—654.3(1)"c" ).
A physician who prescribes opioids must complete 2 hours of chronic pain management training on the CDC's opioid-prescribing guidelines every five years ( Iowa Admin. Code 481—654.3(1)"d" ).
A physician who provides or expects to provide end-of-life care must complete 2 hours of end-of-life care training every five years, regardless of specialty ( Iowa Board of Medicine — Chronic Pain and End-of-Life Training ; Iowa Admin. Code 481—654.3(1)"e" ).
A physician holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — a federal requirement under the MATE Act rather than an Iowa Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Do newly licensed Iowa physicians need CE for their first renewal?
Not the full amount. A physician's first license may be issued for less than 24 months to align with the birth-month renewal cycle, and the number of required Category 1 credit hours is reduced on a pro-rata basis to match ( Iowa Admin. Code 481—654.3(1)"a"(1) ).
Does the Iowa Board of Medicine audit CE records?
Yes. The Board audits a number of renewing physicians each month and may audit a physician's continuing education documentation at any time within four years of a renewal; a physician selected for audit must respond within 30 days ( Iowa Admin. Code 481—654.3(7) ).

I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
