State requirements for Alaska Medical Doctors
All Alaska Physicians Need:
- 2 Hours Pain Management and Opioid Use and Addiction
Some Alaska Physicians Also Need:
- 8 Hours DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)
HOW MANY CE HOURS DO ALASKA PHYSICIANS NEED?
Alaska physicians need 50 hours of Category 1 AMA-approved continuing education every two years, averaging 25 hours a year ( Alaska State Medical Board — Frequently Asked Questions ). You may complete hours online with an on-demand Alaska Medical Doctor CME Package
Alaska runs a fixed biennial cycle: every medical license expires December 31 of even-numbered years, and the Division sends a renewal notice at least 30 days before that date ( Alaska Statutes and Regulations — Medical ).
WHICH CE TOPICS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALASKA PHYSICIANS?
Every physician must complete 2 hours of pain management and opioid use and addiction education in the two years before renewal. A physician may apply for an exemption from this requirement only by showing the Board that their practice doesn't involve pain management or opioid prescribing, or that they no longer hold a DEA registration ( Alaska Statutes and Regulations — Medical ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder , per the federal MATE Act — not an Alaska Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
DO NEWLY LICENSED ALASKA PHYSICIANS NEED CE FOR THEIR FIRST RENEWAL?
Yes. The standard 50-hour requirement applies starting with a physician's first license renewal ( Alaska State Medical Board — Frequently Asked Questions ).
DOES THE ALASKA STATE MEDICAL BOARD AUDIT CE RECORDS?
Yes. The Division performs computer-generated random audits of physicians at renewal, verifying compliance through ACCME's Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS) and requiring proof of completed courses from those selected ( Alaska Statutes and Regulations — Medical ).

I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
