Massage and Migraine Management: What You Need to Know

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the prodrome, aura, attack, and postdrome phases and explain how a client’s reported symptoms may affect the decision to proceed, modify, or defer a massage session.

2. Compare reported features commonly associated with migraine and cervicogenic headache and identify warning signs that require medical referral without making a diagnosis.

3. Evaluate medication and medical-history factors, including triptans and anticoagulants, to select appropriate positioning, pressure, transition, and referral precautions.

4. Develop a client-centered, supportive massage plan using low-force techniques according to symptom phase, client preference, prior response, and tolerance while avoiding claims that massage treats migraine pathophysiology.

This course prepares licensed massage therapists to provide supportive, symptom-guided care for clients who report migraine and associated neck discomfort. Learners review common migraine phases, features that may overlap with cervicogenic headache, red-flag screening, medication-related precautions, and documentation. The course emphasizes that massage therapists do not diagnose migraine, determine vascular pathology, or treat the underlying neurologic disease. Manual techniques are presented as optional supportive strategies that should be selected according to the client’s current symptoms, prior response, tolerance, medical history, and provider-led care plan.

Educational needs

Clients frequently seek nonpharmacologic support for migraine-related discomfort, yet massage therapists may have inconsistent training in referral warning signs, medication precautions, and phase-based modification. This course addresses those needs through scope-safe screening, conservative technique selection, informed consent, documentation, and referral.
