State requirements for Virginia Dental Hygienists
4 hours in
anesthesia/sedationfor dental hygienists who administer or monitor general anesthesia, deep sedation, or moderate sedation (every two years, must complete as part of the required CE)
Virginia Dental Hygienist Standard Renewal Requirements: Dental hygienists in Virginia must renew their licenses annually by their birth month, completing a minimum of 15 hours of board-approved continuing education each year, except for the first renewal following initial licensure. CPR certification with hands-on training is mandatory, and those involved in monitoring sedation or anesthesia patients must complete 4 hours related to sedation every two years. Up to 3 hours of pro bono dental hygiene services for low-income individuals may count toward the CE requirement. Approved course formats include in-person and online education. Excess CE hours can be carried forward up to 15 hours for future renewal periods. Full regulatory details are available from the Virginia Administrative Code
