Virginia Dentistry CE Package

Every Virginia dentist must complete 15 hours of CE for each annual renewal, from a Board-approved sponsor (such as ADA CERP or AGD PACE). Courses must be clinical dentistry or dental hygiene, or nonclinical subjects that support clinical practice such as patient management, legal and ethical responsibilities, and stress management. Estate planning, financial planning, business management, marketing, and personal health do not count. Every dentist must also maintain current BLS/CPR certification with hands-on airway training (or advanced life support if required by a sedation permit). 18VAC60-21-250 , Virginia Board of Dentistry .

Conditional Renewal Requirements

• Dentists who administer or monitor patients under general anesthesia, deep sedation, or moderate sedation must complete 4 hours every two years of CE directly related to administering and monitoring that anesthesia or sedation. These hours count toward the 15 required for renewal, and a sedation permit may also require advanced life support certification. 18VAC60-21-250

• Dentists who prescribeSchedule II, III, or IV controlled substances must complete 2 hours of pain management CE every two years. These hours may count toward the 15 required for renewal. 18VAC60-21-106

First-Time Requirements

• Virginia dentists are exempt from CE for the first renewal following initial licensure. Restricted volunteer licenses are also exempt.

Verification and Reporting

You verify compliance when you complete your annual renewal, and Virginia offers CE Broker for tracking your hours. The board may audit after the renewal period; if selected, you must provide original documents. Retain your original CE documentation for four years following renewal. Virginia Board of Dentistry
