Virginia APRN Standard Renewal Requirements: Virginia APRNs must renew their license every two years by their last day of their birth month. Nurse Practitioners initially licensed on or after May 8, 2002, must hold a current professional certification in their area of specialty practice from an approved national certification agency. Virginia APRNs licensed prior to May 8, 2002 may satisfy continuing competency by either maintaining a national certification or completing 40 hours of Continuing Education . Virginia Board of Nursing 18VAC90-30-105 Regardless of initial licensure date, APRNs with prescriptive authority needs to complete a total of eight hours of continuing nursing education or CME in pharmacology or pharmacotherapeutics for each biennium in addition to the minimal requirements for compliance with subsection B of 18VAC90-30-105 . These hours must be completed by an accredited CEU provider by an acceptable certifying agency such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center ( ANCC )
