State requirements for Utah Medical Doctors
All Utah Physicians Need:
- 0.5 Hours Suicide Prevention Training
Some Utah Physicians Also Need:
- 3.5 Hours Controlled Substance Prescribing CME — If Holding a DOPL Controlled Substance License
- 8 Hours DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)
How many CE hours do Utah physicians need?
Utah physicians need 40 hours of CME every two years, at least 34 of which must be AMA PRA Category 1 or ACCME-accredited credit ( Utah Admin. Code R156-67-304 ).
Renewal falls every two years, by January 31 of each even-numbered year — every Utah physician shares this same date regardless of when the license was first issued ( Utah DOPL — Physician and Surgeon License Renewal ).
Which CE topics are required for Utah physicians?
Every physician must complete a 0.5-credit-hour suicide prevention course, choosing one of three Division-approved online programs — Suicide Safety Planning with Patients, Talking to Patients About Suicide, or Counseling on Access to Lethal Means ( Utah Code Ann. § 58-67-302.5 ; Utah DOPL — Physician and Surgeon ).
A physician who holds a Utah controlled substance license must also complete 3.5 hours of controlled substance prescribing CME each renewal ( Utah Code Ann. § 58-37-6.5 ; Utah DOPL — Physician and Surgeon License Renewal ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — a DEA requirement, not a Utah Division mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Do newly licensed Utah physicians need CE for their first renewal?
It depends on when residency training ended. A physician who completed an ACGME or AOA-accredited residency shortly before licensure has their first-cycle CME hours pro-rated based on the portion of the two-year cycle remaining after residency completion, rather than owing the full 40 hours ( Utah Admin. Code R156-67-304 ).
Does the Utah Division of Professional Licensing audit CE records?
Yes. Physicians self-certify compliance at renewal and are not required to submit documentation unless audited ( Utah Admin. Code R156-67-304 ).

I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
