Additional information

How many CE hours do North Dakota physicians need?

North Dakota physicians need 40 hours of continuing medical education every two years, accepted from AMA Category 1, AOA Category 1, AAFP Prescribed/Elective credit, or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Section 1 credit ( N.D. Admin. Code § 50-04-01-01, -03 ).

Renewal falls every two years, on the physician's birthdate, with online renewal opening 59 days before expiration ( North Dakota Board of Medicine — Renewal ). A physician who holds current certification, maintenance of certification, or recertification from ABMS, the AOA, or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada may use that certification in place of the CME hour requirement ( N.D.C.C. § 43-17-27.1(4) ).

Which CE topics are required for North Dakota physicians?

Every physician must complete 1 hour of CME on nutrition and metabolic health each renewal cycle ( N.D.C.C. § 43-17-27.1(2) ).

A physician who performs abortions must review a Board-provided instructional course covering North Dakota's homicide, abortion-control, and related statutes within two years before performing the procedure, except in a medical emergency; performing an abortion without complying with this review requirement is a class A misdemeanor ( N.D.C.C. § 14-02.1-04(4)-(5) ). This course is now available directly on the Board's website ( North Dakota Board of Medicine — Abortion Laws ).

Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — not a North Dakota Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).

Do newly licensed North Dakota physicians need CE for their first renewal?

Not the full amount. A physician licensed less than 1 year owes no CME; one licensed between 1 and 2 years owes 20 hours; the full 40 hours applies once licensed 2 years or more ( N.D. Admin. Code § 50-04-01-04(1) ).

Does the North Dakota Board of Medicine audit CE records?

Yes. Physicians self-certify compliance at renewal, and the Board conducts selective audits; documentation must be retained at least 1 year, and noncompliance found on audit carries a $500 fee ( N.D. Admin. Code § 50-04-01-04 ; North Dakota Board of Medicine — CME ).

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions related to course packages

What's the benefit of buying a package over individual courses?
So much! Firstly, you'll save a ton of money by bundling your courses together rather than purchasing them individually. Also, we take the guesswork out of it so that you don't need to scour your board's outdated website to figure out which courses you need to take this year – we've already done that for you, and now you can just focus on learning.
Do I need to take all of the courses included in a package to receive credit?
Nope! You're welcome to purchase a package and if you don't need all of them, you can pick and choose which ones you want to take. PRO TIP: if you don't need all of the courses included in the package for this renewal, you can just leave them in your account and take them next time around.
Can I try out a package?
You are more than welcome to sign up for a package to see if it's the right fit for you. If for any reason it is not, you can request to cancel at any time and are welcome to a refund. The only caveat is that you will still be charged for any courses you complete, for which you've already received credit in the form of a certificate of completion and/or reporting to at least 1 board.
If I want a package, do I have to sign up for the auto-renewing subscription
By default, our system will set up the auto-renewing function upon your sign up, however, with just a few clicks you can disable this under your user settings.

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
