State requirements for Nebraska Medical Doctors
All Nebraska Physicians Need:
- No Nebraska-mandated topics — all 50 hours are General Hours.
Some Nebraska Physicians Also Need:
- 3 Hours Opioid Prescribing CME — If Prescribing Controlled Substances (includes 0.5 hour on the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program )
- 8 Hours DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)
How many CE hours do Nebraska physicians need?
Nebraska physicians need 50 hours of Category 1 continuing education every two years, approved by the ACCME or the AOA ( Nebraska DHHS — Medicine and Surgery ).
Licenses expire every two years, on October 1 of every even-numbered year, regardless of when the license was originally issued ( Nebraska DHHS — Medicine and Surgery ).
None of the 50 hours are tied to a topic every physician must complete. A physician who does not prescribe controlled substances and does not hold a DEA registration can satisfy the full requirement with general Category 1 CE.
Which CE topics are required for Nebraska physicians?
A physician who prescribes controlled substances must complete 3 hours of CE on opioid prescribing every two years, of which at least 0.5 hour must specifically cover the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. This requirement is scheduled to terminate January 1, 2029 unless renewed by the Legislature ( Neb. Rev. Stat. § 38-145(6) ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — not a Nebraska Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Do newly licensed Nebraska physicians need CE for their first renewal?
No. A physician first credentialed within the credentialing period immediately preceding their renewal date is fully exempt from the continuing education requirement at that renewal ( Neb. Rev. Stat. § 38-146(2)(b) ).
Does the Nebraska Board of Medicine and Surgery audit CE records?
Yes. The department or board may biennially select a random sample of renewal applications for a continuing-education audit; a licensee who fails to comply after notice and an opportunity for a hearing has their license expire ( Neb. Rev. Stat. § 38-146(3) ).

I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
