How many CE hours do Michigan licensed practical nurses need?
Michigan licensed practical nurses need 25 hours of continuing education approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing every two years to renew an active license ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10601 ).
Your Michigan nursing license renews every two years on the anniversary of its original issue date. The Bureau of Professional Licensing sends a renewal notice roughly 90 business days before your expiration date, and a 60-day grace period with a $20 late fee is available if you renew after expiration ( Michigan LARA, Nursing Licensing Guide and FAQs ).
No more than 12 of your 25 hours can be earned within any single 24-hour period ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10602 ).
There is no live or in-person hour requirement. All 25 hours can be completed online through a Board-approved provider including a Michigan Nurse Complete CEU Package
Which CE topics are required for Michigan licensed practical nurses?
Every Michigan LPN's 25-hour total includes 2 hours of pain and symptom management, required at every renewal ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10601 ).
Every LPN also completes implicit bias training at a rate of 1 hour for each year of the two-year renewal cycle, for 2 hours total. This training counts toward your 25-hour CE requirement ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.7004 ).
Separately, every LPN completes a one-time training in identifying victims of human trafficking before renewing, covering the types and venues of trafficking, recognizing victims and warning signs in a healthcare setting, and reporting resources ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10105 ; authorizing statute MCL 333.16148 ). Michigan's rule sets no specific hour minimum for this training and treats it as separate from continuing education, so it is completed separately from your 25 CE hours. It applies to renewals beginning March 31, 2018, and to initial licenses issued after January 6, 2022.
Do newly licensed Michigan licensed practical nurses need CE for their first renewal?
Yes, if your license was first issued on or after May 8, 2024. Michigan ended its earlier first-renewal exemption effective that date, so an LPN licensed from that point forward completes the full 25-hour requirement, including the 2 hours of pain and symptom management and the 2 hours of implicit bias training, at their first renewal and each renewal thereafter ( Michigan LARA, Nursing Licensing Guide and FAQs ).
You must also meet the one-time human trafficking training requirement. Once completed, this training does not need to be repeated for later renewals.
Does the Michigan Board of Nursing use CE Broker to audit LPN CE records?
Yes. The Board conducts a random audit after each renewal period, selecting a percentage of licensees who renewed to verify their continuing education ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10601 ). The Board does not publish its audit selection rate. All audited nurses will need to report proof of CE compliance through the Michigan official CE tracking tool, CE Broker.
Keep your certificates and other proof of completion. You do not submit them with your renewal application unless selected for audit. Keep your general CE records for at least four years, and keep proof of your one-time human trafficking training and your implicit bias training for six years, the retention period the implicit bias rule specifically sets ( Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.7004 ).
