How many CE hours do Michigan dental hygienists need?

Michigan dental hygienists need 36 hours of Board-approved continuing education every 3 years, running from each hygienist's own license issue date. At least 12 of the 36 hours must come from live courses or programs, either in person or by webinar with faculty-participant interaction. No more than 18 hours may be asynchronous self-study, with independent reading capped separately at 10 hours ( Mich. Admin. Which CE topics are required for Michigan dental hygienists?

Pain and Symptom Management (2 hours) is required of every hygienist each renewal. Dental Ethics and Jurisprudence (1 hour), including delegation of duties to allied dental personnel, and Infection Control (1 hour), covering handpiece sterilization, PPE, and CDC guidelines, are also required every renewal ( Mich. Admin. Code R 338.11704 , incorporated by reference into the relicensure rule at R 338.11267 ).

Every hygienist completes a one-time Human Trafficking Identification Training as a standing licensure condition kept separate from the 36-hour CE requirement — it does not count toward the total. The rule specifies the required content but does not set a minimum training duration ( Mich. Admin. Code R 338.11267 and R 338.11271 ).

Every hygienist also completes 3 hours of Implicit Bias Training under the Public Health Code's Article 15 mandate — 2 hours before initial licensure, then 1 hour per year of the renewal cycle. This training does not count toward the 36-hour dentistry total; it's a separate obligation on top of it ( Mich. Admin. Code R 338.7004 ).

Every hygienist must also hold current BLS or ACLS certification with a hands-on skills component — a standing credential condition of renewal, not a CE-hour requirement.

Do newly licensed Michigan dental hygienists need CE for their first renewal?
