State requirements for Maine Medical Doctors
All Maine Physicians Need:
- 3 Hours Opioid Prescribing CME
Some Maine Physicians Also Need:
- 8 Hours DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)
How many CE hours do Maine physicians need?
Maine physicians need 40 hours of Category 1 continuing medical education every two years. Category 1 hours must come from a program accredited by the American Medical Association, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, the Committee on CME of the Maine Medical Association, or the Board itself; Category 1 hours may substitute for Category 2 hours a physician happens to hold, but not the reverse ( Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine — Continuing Medical Education Information ).
Effective February 3, 2026, a physician may instead satisfy the full 40-hour requirement by holding a current American Board of Medical Specialties certification that includes maintenance of certification — a lifetime certification does not qualify — though the 3-hour opioid CME below is still required separately either way ( Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine, Spring 2026 Newsletter ).
Maine runs a birth-month cycle: every physician renews every two years, by the last day of their birth month, with the specific year determined by the parity of their birth year — physicians born in an even-numbered year renew in even-numbered years, and physicians born in an odd-numbered year renew in odd-numbered years ( 32 M.R.S. §3280-A — Biennial Renewal of Licenses ; Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine — MD License ).
Which CE topics are required for Maine physicians?
Every physician must complete 3 hours of Category 1 CME on the prescribing of opioid medication every two years, counted within — not on top of — the standard 40-hour total. The Board includes these three hours within the 40-hour total under its controlled-substance prescribing rule ( Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine — License FAQ ; Board Rule Chapter 21 — Use of Controlled Substances for Treatment of Pain ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — not a Maine Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Do newly licensed Maine physicians need CE for their first renewal?
Not the full amount — and it can also run higher than 40 hours. The Board prorates the requirement by how many months the license has been active before the first renewal expiration, at roughly 2 hours per month held: from 8 hours for a license held 4 months, up through the full 40 hours for a license held 20 to 24 months, and continuing to climb past 40 — up to 46 hours — for a first renewal period that runs 25 to 27 months ( Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine — Continuing Medical Education Information ).
Does the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine audit CE records?
Yes. Board staff randomly audit 10% of renewal applications each month to verify Category 1 CME, requesting evidence of certification from the physicians selected; any CME discrepancy found is referred to the Board's Licensure Committee for review and a recommendation to the Board ( Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine — Continuing Medical Education Information ). Physicians must maintain a file of their CME activity, both current and historical, though the Board does not publish a specific retention period in years.

I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
