Additional information

How many CE hours do Kansas physicians need?

Kansas physicians need 50 credits of continuing education, completed during the 18 months immediately preceding their license expiration date, with at least 20 of those credits in Category I and at least 1 in Category III ( K.A.R. 100-15-5 ). A physician who falls short of that 18-month standard can instead certify 100 credits over the trailing 30 months (minimum 40 Category I, 2 Category III) or 150 credits over the trailing 42 months (minimum 60 Category I, 3 Category III) — three alternative compliance windows measured back from the same renewal date, not three separate obligations stacked on top of each other ( K.A.R. 100-15-5 ). You may complete all 50 hours online with an on-demand Complete Kansas CME Physician Package

Physician (MD) licenses renew annually and expire every June 30, the same date for every Kansas physician regardless of when the license was first issued ( K.A.R. 100-15-1 ).

Aside from the required Category III credit, Kansas does not assign a fixed number of credits to another specific topic within the standard requirement. Category I credit covers structured activities such as lectures, panel discussions, workshops, seminars, and symposia; Category II covers less-structured activities such as clinical consultations with other healing arts practitioners and journal clubs. Neither category is restricted to a live or in-person format under the Board's own definitions ( K.A.R. 100-15-4 ).

Which CE topics are required for Kansas physicians?

Every physician must complete at least 1 Category III credit within each certification window, covering acute or chronic pain management, the appropriate prescribing of opioids, or the use of prescription drug monitoring programs ( K.A.R. 100-15-4 ; K.A.R. 100-15-5 ).

Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — not a Kansas Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).

Do newly licensed Kansas physicians need CE for their first renewal?

No. Kansas excludes first-time license renewals from the continuing education requirement; the standard credit requirement applies starting with the physician's next renewal after that ( K.A.R. 100-15-5 ).

Does the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts audit CE records?

Yes. The Board requires every active licensee to submit evidence of satisfactory completion of the continuing education it mandates, so physicians need to keep their own supporting records rather than relying on self-attestation alone ( K.S.A. 65-2809 ).

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
