How many CE hours do Idaho physicians need?
Idaho physicians need 40 hours of practice-relevant Category 1 continuing medical education during the two years preceding each license renewal ( IDAPA 24.33.01.100.04.a.i — Rules of the Idaho Board of Medicine ). You may complete all 40 hours online with an on-demand Complete Idaho Medical Doctor CME Package.
A physician can also satisfy this requirement by maintaining current board certification from the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Osteopathic Association, or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or by participating full-time in an accredited residency or fellowship program during the renewal period ( IDAPA 24.33.01.100.04.a ).
The renewal cycle itself changed recently. Effective April 1, 2026, the Idaho Board of Medicine moved physician licenses from the prior annual renewal to an individualized two-year cycle that expires on the licensee's own birthdate, rather than a shared calendar date ( Idaho Board of Medicine ). Physicians already licensed before the changeover are being carried into the new cycle on a one-time transition date set by birth year: those born before June 30 move onto the new cycle on their birthdate in 2028 (even birth years) or 2029 (odd birth years), and those born on or after June 30 move in 2030 (even birth years) or 2031 (odd birth years) ( DOPL — Board of Medicine biennial licensure transition announcement ). Every new applicant now receives at least a two-year license expiring on their own date of birth from the outset. The 40-hour CME requirement itself is unchanged by this transition.
The same rule chapter governs both medical and osteopathic physicians licensed in Idaho ( IDAPA 24.33.01.100 ).
Which CE topics are required for Idaho physicians?
Idaho sets no state-mandated CME topics for physicians — the 40 hours may be earned on any practice-relevant subject, from an institution accredited by the ACCME, the AOA, or a reciprocating organization ( IDAPA 24.33.01.100.04 ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder , per the federal MATE Act — not an Idaho Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Do newly licensed Idaho physicians need CE for their first renewal?
Yes. The standard 40-hour requirement (or one of its board-certification or residency/fellowship alternatives) applies starting with a physician's first license renewal, and every new applicant now receives at least a two-year license expiring on their own birthdate ( IDAPA 24.33.01.100.04 ; DOPL — Board of Medicine biennial licensure transition announcement ).
Does the Idaho Board of Medicine audit CE records?
Yes. The Board may require a physician to submit additional evidence, beyond their renewal attestation, to verify compliance, and non-compliance can result in the Board conditioning, limiting, suspending, or refusing to renew a license ( IDAPA 24.33.01.100.04.b ).

I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
