Iowa Dentist

Total Hours Required:

30 hours

Next Renewal Date:

August 31, 2022 – every 2 years

Required Courses:

  • 3 hours (maximum) in CPR certification courses (live)
  • 1 hour in Infection control
  • 1 hour in Iowa Jurisprudence
  • 2 hours in child/adult abuse identification & reporting training through the Department of Human Services (every 3 years)
  • 1 hour in opioids (for dentists who prescribe opioids)
  • 6 hours in sedation (for dentists with a deep sedation/general anesthesia or moderate [conscious] sedation permit)

Iowa Dental Hygienist

Total Hours Required:

30 hours

Next Renewal Date:

August 31, 2022 – every 2 years

Required Courses:

  • 1 hour in Infection control
  • 1 hour in Iowa Jurisprudence
  • 2 hours in child/adult abuse identification & reporting training (every 3 years) through the Department of Human Services
  • 3 (maximum) hours in CPR certification courses (live)
  • 1 hour in opioids (for opioid prescribers)
  • 6 hours in sedation (for persons with a deep sedation/general anesthesia or moderate [conscious] sedation permit)

Iowa Dental Assistant

Total Hours Required:

20 hours

Next Renewal Date:

August 31, 2023 – every 2 years

Required Courses:

  • 13 general hours w/o dental radiology
  • 11 general hours w/ dental radiology
  • 3 hours in CPR certification (includes hands-on)
  • 1 hour in infection control
  • 1 hour in Iowa Jurisprudence
  • 2 hours in child/adult abuse identification & reporting training
  • 2 hours in dental radiology for dental assistants with an added qualification in dental radiography.

Additional Information

  • A maximum of 12 hours may be completed online for all professions.
  • The initial requirement for child/adult abuse identification & reporting training is for 4 hours.
