About this webinar

This 1-hour credit course is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and approved by the Florida Board of Pharmacy. The use of hypnotics has increased over the past 20 years however evidence-based medicine shows that their use leads to poor outcomes. By highlighting these dangers and discussing non-pharmacologic approaches, this activity aims to broaden the management of insomnia and assist the pharmacist in managing and recommending therapy. This course can be used to satisfy 1 hour of live requirements for pharmacists.

At the conclusion of this continuing education activity, the participant will be able to:

    Describe the diagnostic criteria of insomnia disorder.

    Identify medications and medical and psychiatric conditions commonly associated with difficulty sleeping.

    Discuss non-pharmacologic approaches for managing insomnia disorder.

    Compare and contrast brand and generic names, mechanisms of action, dosing, adverse effects, interactions, and the place in therapy of hypnotics.

    Describe goals of therapy, educational points, and factors influencing selection of hypnotics.

    List preferred hypnotics for treating insomnia disorder in special populations.

Dr. Tim Brown is the Director of Interprofessional Education for the University of Georgia’s College of Pharmacy and a Professor in Pharmacology and Toxicology for Augusta University Medical College of Georgia and UGA Partnership. He received his doctorate from Campbell University School of Pharmacy and completed residency training at the Medical College of Virginia. In 2018, Brown was named the Ohio Health-System Pharmacist of the Year and received the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Graduate Medical Education Leader of the year award. He was also recognized by the American Academy of Family Physicians as the 2017 Outstanding Faculty for Live Activities. Brown is a past board member of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and is recognized nationally as a leader within Ambulatory Care Practice. Dr. Brown is the co-editor of the two books designed to help others build their Ambulatory Care practice models and is the host of the podcast, “PharmCast for the Community.”​
