State requirements for Oklahoma Medical Doctors
All Oklahoma Physicians Need:
- No Oklahoma-mandated topics — all 60 hours are General Hours.
Some Oklahoma Physicians Also Need:
- 3 Hours Pain Management or Opioid Use CME — If Holding a DEA Registration
- Medical Marijuana Recommendation Education — If Registering to Recommend Medical Marijuana
- Rights and Responsibilities of Healthcare Workers Training — If Practicing in an Inpatient Setting (Every 2 Years)
- 8 Hours DEA MATE Act Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)
How many CE hours do Oklahoma physicians need?
Oklahoma physicians need 60 hours of Category I continuing medical education every three years, credited by the American Medical Association, the Oklahoma State Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, or another certifying organization the Board recognizes ( OAC 435:10-15-1(a)(2) ).
The three-year cycle runs from the date a physician's license was originally granted, so each physician renews on their own licensure anniversary rather than a shared calendar date ( OAC 435:10-15-1(a)(1), (3) ). Oklahoma does not mandate a specific topic for every physician, so all 60 hours are General Hours unless a physician falls into one of the conditional categories below.
Which CE topics are required for Oklahoma physicians?
No topic is mandated for every Oklahoma physician. Several topics apply only to physicians in specific circumstances, and none of them add hours on top of the 60-hour total:
A physician holding a DEA registration must complete at least 1 hour of pain management or opioid use/addiction education each year — 3 hours across the three-year renewal cycle — unless the physician demonstrates to the Board that they do not currently hold a valid DEA registration ( 59 O.S. § 495a.1 ).
A physician registering with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) to recommend medical marijuana must complete an OMMA-approved education course before registering — current options run roughly 3 to 6.25 hours depending on the course chosen — and must renew that education annually to keep the registration active ( Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority — Physicians ).
A physician associated with an inpatient health care services entity must review a Board-provided presentation on the rights and responsibilities of health care workers at least once every two calendar years; the statute specifies this time counts as part of, not in addition to, the physician's required CE ( 63 O.S. § 3162(C) ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training on treating patients with opioid or substance use disorders. This is a federal requirement tied to any DEA registration, new or renewed — not an Oklahoma Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Do newly licensed Oklahoma physicians need CE for their first renewal?
Yes. The three-year CME cycle begins on the date a physician's license is originally granted, so the standard 60-hour requirement applies at a physician's first renewal the same as every renewal after it ( OAC 435:10-15-1(a)(3) ). Oklahoma does not carry a separate one-time opioid or pain-management course tied specifically to a physician's first year of licensure the way some other Oklahoma boards do: the annual pain management/opioid CME described above applies every year a DEA-registered physician holds a license, starting with the first, and the federal MATE Act's one-time 8-hour training is triggered by when a physician first obtains or renews a DEA registration, not by their Oklahoma licensure date.
Does the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision audit CE records?
Yes. The Board may randomly or for cause select physicians for a CME audit; failure to produce records renders the renewal application incomplete and can suspend the physician's ability to practice ( OAC 435:10-15-1(b), (c) ).

I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
