State requirements for New Mexico Medical Doctors
All New Mexico Physicians Need:
- 1 Hour Medical Practice Act Review
Some New Mexico Physicians Also Need:
- 5 Hours Pain Management CME — If Holding a DEA Registration and a New Mexico Controlled Substances Registration
- 8 Hours DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)
How many CE hours do New Mexico physicians need?
New Mexico physicians need 75 hours of Category I AMA CME during each triennial (3-year) renewal cycle ( 16.10.4.8(A) NMAC ; New Mexico Medical Board — Licensing ).
A physician's license renews on July 1 following the date of issue, and every three years after that ( 16.10.2.9(G) NMAC ). A newly licensed physician's initial term before that first July 1 renewal can run as short as one month or as long as thirteen months (up to 35 months if New Mexico is the physician's first state of licensure), so the specific calendar year a given physician's triennial cycle lands on is set by that individual's own licensure date rather than a single year shared by every New Mexico physician.
Of the 75 hours, only 1 hour is tied to a specific mandated topic — the rest are General Hours. CME completion is tracked through CE Broker, the Board's designated system ( New Mexico Medical Board — Licensing ).
Which CE topics are required for New Mexico physicians?
Every physician must complete 1 hour reviewing the New Mexico Medical Practice Act and Board rules, certified at renewal ( 16.10.4.8(B) NMAC ).
A physician holding both a DEA registration and a New Mexico Controlled Substances Registration must also complete 5 hours of pain management CME every triennial cycle — counted as part of the 75-hour total, not owed on top of it ( 16.10.14 NMAC ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — not a New Mexico Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Several restricted license types are exempt from CME entirely: federal-emergency, telemedicine-only, postgraduate-training, public-service, temporary-teaching, and youth camp/school licenses ( 16.10.4.8(C) NMAC ).
Do newly licensed New Mexico physicians need CE for their first renewal?
Yes. New Mexico's CME rule does not carve out an exception for newly licensed physicians — 75 hours of Category I AMA CME applies to "all medical licenses during each triennial renewal cycle" ( 16.10.4.8(A) NMAC ), including a first cycle that can run shorter than three full years because a new license's first renewal is fixed to the next July 1 after issuance. No subsection of the rule spells out a reduced or prorated hour count for that shorter first cycle.
Does the New Mexico Medical Board audit CE records?
Yes. Physicians attest to CME completion at renewal and the Board may select applications for audit; CE Broker is the Board's designated tracking platform ( New Mexico Medical Board — Licensing ).

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
