State requirements for Missouri Medical Doctors
All Missouri Physicians Need:
- 1 Hour Nutrition and Health Benefits CME
Some Missouri Physicians Also Need:
- 8 Hours DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)
How many CE hours do Missouri physicians need?
Missouri physicians need 50 hours of continuing medical education every two years, using AMA Category 1, AOA Category 1-A/2-A, or American Academy of Family Physicians Prescribed Credit. A physician may instead complete 40 hours if every activity used includes a post-test and all 40 hours are Category 1 or AOA Category 1-A ( 20 CSR 2150-2.125 ).
Renewal falls every two years on a fixed calendar cycle: the reporting period runs January 1 of each even-numbered year through December 31 of the following odd-numbered year, the same for every licensee regardless of when they were first licensed ( 20 CSR 2150-2.125 ).
Which CE topics are required for Missouri physicians?
Every physician must complete 1 hour of CME on the health benefits of nutrition, within the standard 50-hour total, effective June 30, 2026 ( 20 CSR 2150-2.125 ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — not a Missouri Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Do newly licensed Missouri physicians need CE for their first renewal?
No. A physician who has never previously held a permanent healing arts license — in Missouri or any other state — owes no CME for the reporting period in which they are first licensed ( 20 CSR 2150-2.125 ).
Does the Missouri State Board of Registration for the Healing Arts audit CE records?
Yes. The Board may audit licensees to verify compliance, and licensees must retain CME documentation for a minimum of 3 years after the reporting period ( 20 CSR 2150-2.125 ).

I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
