About this course
This material will provide the participant with an overview of factors necessary to equip clinicians to identify Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in response to life-altering medical conditions, such as spinal cord injury (SCI), and to provide therapeutic services to these individuals. First, an orientation to the types and characteristics of SCI is provided to inform clinicians about the basic differences among SCI, and the challenges that individuals with SCI typically face. Second, a definition of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) within the medical context is reviewed and the risk factors for PTSD among those with SCI are discussed. While a comprehensive overview of PTSD treatment is beyond the scope of this course, references are provided to materials regarding general PTSD assessment and treatment. Finally, implications specific to addressing PTSD among persons with SCI are provided with an emphasis on assessing and treating PTSD within this medical model.
