After completing this course, health professionals will be able to:

1. Summarize the empirical evidence about the psychosocial adjustment of adolescents to type 1 diabetes and clinically apply these research findings to help teenage patients manage psychosocial aspects of diabetes within the context of specific developmental changes.

2. Recognize 10 comorbid medical conditions commonly associated with diabetes and at least 2 ways in which diabetes management may be negatively affected by inadequate psychological adjustment to the condition among this age group.

3. Identify at least 2 ways adolescent diabetes impacts psychological adjustment in the identified patient and at least 3 ways it influences family dynamics — such as parenting and relationships with siblings.

4. Utilize current developments in healthcare to address psychosocial adjustment to teen diabetes including the application of 2 innovative interventions (MST & BFST) and 2 national healthcare quality improvement initiatives to guide services.
