About this course
While opioids and other controlled substances play an important role in pain and disease management for individuals suffering from a variety of debilitating chronic health conditions, they have also led to an unprecedented health crisis in the United States resulting in tens of thousands of overdose deaths each year. Health care providers who prescribe controlled substances, as well as pharmacists who dispense them, have an ethical duty to prescribe and dispense these medications in a safe and effective manner. They also have a legal obligation to comply with federal and state guidelines regarding controlled medications. The following course provides an overview of the opioid epidemic facing the United States as well as steps that prescribers and pharmacists can take to limit controlled substance misuse and diversion.
