Total Hours Required
100 Hours
Required Courses
2 hours must be on the topic of child abuse recognition and reporting requirements
At least 4 hours must consist of 2 hours in pain management or the identification of addiction, or 2 hours in the practice of prescribing or dispensing of opioids
20 hours must be AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™
At least 12 hours must be on the topic of or related to patient safety or risk management, and may be completed in either Category 1 or 2
Additional information
Pennsylvania Medical Doctor Standard Renewal Requirements: Medical Doctors in Pennsylvania must renew their licenses every two years by December 31 of even-numbered years, completing 100 hours of CME, including at least 20 hours of AOA Category 1-A or AMA PRA Category 1 credit, and 12 hours in patient safety or risk management topics. Each renewal cycle also requires 2 hours of child abuse recognition and reporting , and 2 hours of education in pain management , addiction, or opioid prescribing . Exemptions exist for first-time licensees and retired physicians providing limited care. CME documentation must be maintained for audits, but reporting is by self-attestation during renewal. These regulations are mandated by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine and published in the Pennsylvania Code PA Code §25.271
