How many CE hours do Nevada physicians need?
Nevada physicians need 40 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 continuing medical education every two years, of which 2 hours must be in medical ethics and 20 hours must be within the physician's own scope of practice or specialty ( NAC 630.153 ).
Renewal falls every two years; the current registration period runs to June 30, with the new period beginning July 1 ( NAC 630.175 ; Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners — CME Requirements ).
Which CE topics are required for Nevada physicians?
Every physician must complete 2 hours of medical ethics each renewal, a one-time 2-hour SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) training within 2 years of initial licensure, and 2 hours of suicide detection, intervention, and prevention training within 2 years of initial licensure and every 4 years thereafter ( NAC 630.153 ; NAC 630.156 ; NAC 630.1545 ). All three of these hour totals count toward the standard 40-hour requirement rather than adding to it — the regulations describe each as hours the physician "is entitled to receive credit towards the continuing medical education required pursuant to NAC 630.153."
A physician registered to dispense controlled substances must also complete 2 hours on the misuse of controlled substances, opioid prescribing, and addiction each renewal ( NAC 630.156 ); a physician practicing psychiatry must complete 2 hours of cultural competency and diversity, equity, and inclusion training each renewal ( NAC 630.1567 ); and a physician providing or supervising emergency medical services must complete a one-time 2-hour HIV/AIDS stigma and bias training within 2 years of beginning that role ( NAC 630.1563 ).
Every physician must also complete a one-time course of instruction on the medical consequences of an act of terrorism involving a weapon of mass destruction — within 2 years of initial licensure for a physician licensed on or after October 1, 2003 ( NAC 630.154 ). The regulation states this course is "in addition to the continuing education required pursuant to NAC 630.153," so it sits outside the standard 40-hour total rather than counting toward it, and the Board does not publish a specific hour count for it.
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — not a Nevada Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Do newly licensed Nevada physicians need CE for their first renewal?
The amount depends on the initial licensure date. The Board prorates the 40-hour requirement based on initial licensure date within the current biennium: 40 hours if licensed before 7/1/2025 or between 7/1/2025-12/31/2025, 30 hours for 1/1/2026-6/30/2026, 20 hours for 7/1/2026-12/31/2026, and 10 hours for 1/1/2027-6/30/2027 ( Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners — CME Requirements ).
Does the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners audit CE records?
Yes. Physicians may be selected for a CME audit at renewal and must provide proof of completion if selected ( Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners — CME Requirements ).

Very well written, easy to digest, time efficient, and straight to the point. Thank you!
I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
