Illinois RDH Standard Renewal Requirements: Illinois dental hygienists renew every three years on September 30 and must report 36 CE hours per cycle, with at least 18 hours obtained through live or other interactive formats. Requirements include one hour of Sexual-Harassment Prevention training, one hour of Implicit-Bias Awareness , and proof of current BLS certification, all of which may count toward the 36-hour total. Courses may be clinical or supportive non-clinical subjects, and up to half the hours may be earned online via correspondence or self-study.

Live / “In-Person” Hour Minimum: No more than 50 % (18 hrs) may be correspondence/self-study; the rest must be live, tele-conference with a moderator, or similar interactive formats.

First-time renewal: Newly-licensed hygienists are exempt from CE for their first renewal.

Certification alternative / hardship waiver: A licensee may petition the Board for a CE waiver due to active military service, temporary incapacitating illness, or other undue hardship.
