Additional information
  • Hawaii APRN Standard Renewal Requirements: Hawaii APRNs must renew licensure by June 30 of odd-numbered years and complete 30 hours of CE every two years, with at least 8 hours in pharmacology if they hold prescriptive authority. As an alternative, other recognized learning options—like national certification, nurse residency, board-approved coursework, preceptorship, research, or academic teaching—can satisfy renewal requirements. The Board of Nursing provides a detailed list of all accepted learning activity options. APRN Renewal Requirements

---

  • First-time renewal: Recent APRN graduates may qualify for an exemption from the continuing competency requirement for their first renewal. [2025 Nursing Renewal FAQ, p.8]

---

  • Certification alternative: APRNs without prescriptive authority may renew by simply attesting to current national advanced-practice certification—no additional CE hours are needed. cca.hawaii.gov

---

---

  • The Board accepts alternative “learning activity options,” including current national certification, board-recognized nurse residency programs, and post-licensure academic credits (1 semester = 15 contact hours). Only one option may be used per biennium. cca.hawaii.gov

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
