State requirements for Arizona Osteopathic Physicians
3 hours in opioid / substance-use-disorder / addiction-related CME
Arizona Osteopathic Physician Standard Renewal Requirements: Arizona DOs renew every two years (Board notices emphasize December 31, while statute states on or before January 1) and must complete 40 hours of Board-approved CME in the preceding two years, including at least 24 hours of AOA Category 1-A. If you prescribe or dispense controlled substances, you must include 3 hours of opioid/substance-use/addiction-related CME within those 40 hours. The rule also permits satisfying CME through approved postgraduate training completed during the renewal period. See A.R.S. § 32-1825, A.A.C. R4-22-207, and the Board’s CME Courses page for details.
---
First-time renewal: The Board’s licensing cost guidance states that during the first year (or partial year) of initial Arizona licensure, a DO is required to attend 20 hours of CME (not prorated) before the first renewal, after which renewals are biennial with 40 hours per cycle. Source
---
Certification alternative (ABMS/AOA or NCCPA): No information found on this requirement from the state board site. (Rule accepts AOA/board activity reports as documentation of CME but does not state that board certification substitutes for CME hours.) Source
---
Controlled substance / Opioid prescribing: DOs who prescribe or dispense controlled substances must complete at least 3 CME hours on opioids/SUD/addiction each renewal cycle, which counts toward the 40 hours. Source
---
DEA or PMP enrollment: A prescriber with an active DEA registration in Arizona must register for the Controlled Substances Prescription Monitoring Program (CSPMP) and review a patient’s CSPMP record before prescribing an opioid analgesic or benzodiazepine in Schedules II–IV at initiation and periodically, as specified in A.R.S. § 36-2606 and the CSPMP FAQs. I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
