Total Hours Required:
40 hours
Next Renewal Date:
October 31, 2023 – every 2 years
Required Courses:
- 30 general hours
- 3 hours in pharmacology and internal medicine
- 2 hours in infection control
- 1 hour in ethics and NJ law
- 1 hour in prescription opioid drugs
- 3 hours in CPR – hands-on
- Maximum of 20 hours may be completed online.
New Jersey Dental Hygienist
Total Hours Required:
20 hours
Next Renewal Date:
December 31, 2021 – every 2 years
Required Courses:
- 14 general hours
- 3 hours in CPR
- 1 hour in infection control
- 1 hour in ethics
- 1 hour in prescription opioid drugs
- 4 hours in the administration of local anesthesia every 4 years for permit holders
- Maximum of 10 hours may be completed online.
New Jersey Registered Dental Assistant
Total Hours Required:
10 hours

December 31, 2021 – every 2 years
Required Courses:
- 4 general hours
- 3 hours in CPR
- 1 hour in infection control
- 1 hour in ethics
- 1 hour in prescription opioid drugs

Additional Information
- COVID-19: Due to the pandemic, the Division of Consumer Affairs entered an administrative order in April 2020 in effect during the public health emergency through January 11, 2022. Under that order, licensees and registrants may count courses taken remotely (online) toward live continuing education requirements.
- Licensed dentists who graduated from dental school in 2020 must complete 20 hours of continuing education to renew.
- Licensed dentist who graduated from dental school in 2021 is exempt from the continuing education requirements for the upcoming renewal.
