Organ and Tissue Donation: Clinical and Ethical Essentials for New Jersey Nurses

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

1. Explain the medical and ethical foundations of organ and tissue donation, including donor eligibility criteria, brain death determination, and donation after circulatory death.

2. Describe the organ and tissue procurement process, from donor identification and authorization to surgical recovery and preservation.

3. Identify the role of Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) and their collaboration with healthcare facilities to facilitate organ and tissue donation.

4. Analyze common barriers to organ donation, including public misconceptions, cultural and religious considerations, and healthcare system challenges, and propose strategies to address them.

5. Apply best practices in nursing care for potential organ and tissue donors, including donor management, family communication, and interdisciplinary coordination to 

   optimize donation outcomes.
