Detailed Breakdown
  • Florida Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Standard Renewal Requirements: Florida DOs renew every two years and must complete 40 hours of CME, including 1 hour Florida Laws & Rules/Ethics and 2 hours Medical Errors each cycle; Domestic Violence (2 hours) is due every third cycle, and HIV/AIDS (1 hour) is required for first renewal. Those registered with the DEA and authorized to prescribe controlled substances must complete a Board-approved 2-hour controlled-substance prescribing course at each renewal; at least 20 hours must be AOA Category 1-A. See the Board’s renewal/CE page for full details.

  • First-time renewal: If your first license was issued before July 1 of the second year of the biennium, complete 1 hr Florida Laws & Rules/Ethics, 2 hrs Medical Errors, 1 hr HIV/AIDS, and (if DEA-registered/authorized) 2 hrs Controlled-Substance Prescribing; if issued after July 1, complete only the 1 hr Laws & Rules/Ethics and 2 hrs Medical Errors.

  • Controlled substance / Opioid prescribing: DEA-registered/authorized prescribers must take a 2-hour course on controlled-substance prescribing at every renewal (Board-approved providers listed by the Board).

  • DEA or PMP enrollment: Before prescribing or dispensing a controlled substance to a patient age 16+, prescribers (or designees) must consult Florida’s PDMP (E-FORCSE), with limited statutory exceptions.

  • Human trafficking / Abuse recognition: Florida law requires a one-time 1-hour human-trafficking course (counts toward CE in the biennium taken); the statute does not require repeating in later cycles.
