Effective Treatments for Marijuana Dependence

After completing this course, health professionals will be able to:

1. Articulate the scope of marijuana dependence, including its etiology, prevalence, effects on the neurotransmitter system, and four key risk factors contributing to the disorder.

2. Clinically differentiate between three categories of marijuana users - casual, chronic, and heavy – based on diagnostic criteria, tolerance patterns, withdrawal symptoms, comorbidity, medicinal applications, and potency over time, including addiction potential and toxicity.

3. Integrate evidence-based psychosocial interventions into clinical practice using various treatment modalities (e.g., short-term, group, family), address barriers to treatment, and explore adjunct resources such as pharmacological options and peer-support networks.

Marijuana is the most widely used illicit psychoactive substance worldwide, with usage rates surpassing those of all other drugs combined. In the U.S., over 15 million individuals use marijuana, and approximately 4 million meet the criteria for cannabis use disorder. Treatment admissions for marijuana dependence have more than doubled in the past decade, often involving individuals with over 10 years of daily use. This course equips mental health professionals with the knowledge and tools to address marijuana dependency effectively. Topics include the epidemiology of cannabis use disorder, diagnostic criteria, and evidence-based treatment strategies.
