Activity Overview

This course discusses effective child and parent reunification through understanding the different risks in order to ensure a high success rate of reunification.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this continuing education activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Understand the risks and benefits of supporting child and family reunification and preventing reentry into the foster care system
  2. Understand and assess factors that affect reunification and the likelihood of reentry including foster care length and placements history, broad social and economic conditions, and health-related issues in the parents, caretakers, or returned children
  3. Understand and apply the concept of concurrent planning to obtain and identify multiple options for permanent placement rather that performing these tasks consecutively
  4. Have a strong concept of casework practices that support reunification and reduce reentry into childcare systems
  5. Understand and apply best practices based on national statistics of successful reunification
  6. Understand and apply national statistics that identify common patterns and causes of reentry
  7. Identify systemic factors that affect reunification and reentry including racial identity, poverty, and substance abuse
  8. Understand the relationship between efforts reunite families and work required to prevent reentry into childcare systems
  9. Apply best practices for collaborating and coordinating with related childcare agencies and community-based organizations
  10. Apply best practices for developing strategies for reunification and prevention of reentry into the child welfare system
