Medication errors can bring unnecessary harm to patients, yet most of them are avoidable. This activity is intended to help healthcare professionals prevent medication errors involving IV fluids and educate them about IV fluid dose computation and administration.

1. Explain the difference between fluid maintenance, replacement, and resuscitation
2. Calculate dose IV fluids appropriate for indication, disease state(s), and patient-specific factors
3. Solve a patient case to identify any medication errors regarding administration of IV fluids

Faculty Information

Maria Leibfried, BS, PharmD, BCNSP is Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. She is a licensed pharmacist in NY and NJ with a clinical practice in acute care/internal medicine at The Valley Hospital in Bergen County, NJ. Maria graduated with a BS in Pharmacy & PharmD from Rutgers University and is Board Certified in Nutrition Support.

Joanne Son, PharmD received her doctorate of pharmacy from Saint John’s University. She is a PGY-2 ambulatory care pharmacy resident at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in Brooklyn, New York. She completed her PGY-1 pharmacy residency at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Her areas of interest include chronic disease state management and cardiology.
