HIV – 40 Years And Counting… – 1 CE

Activity Overview

With eight categories of HIV meds now available, healthcare professionals need to be up to date about these therapies. Whether using regimens from 20 years ago, or the newest drugs healthcare professionals need to be monitoring adherence to those regimens. By providing data from the San Francisco Study to show the needs for 95% adherence. This Florida-approved course will also describe the advantages and disadvantages of each category of drugs, as well as those individual drugs.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this continuing education activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Define HIV and AIDS, its history and epidemiology
  2. Identify common modes of HIV transmission
  3. Describe methods in which HIV may be transmitted in a health care setting
  4. Discuss universal precautions and other infection control techniques that can reduce the risk of HIV transmission in healthcare settings
  5. Identify common secondary infections and conditions associated with HIV and AIDS
  6. Determine clinical strategies for the prevention and management of HIV and AIDS and describe the changes in HIV disease state management over the past 40 years
  7. Discuss federal and Florida laws pertaining to HIV and AIDS, including confidentiality of testing, the treatment of patients, partner notification and reporting requirements, and the offering of HIV testing to pregnant women

Faculty Information

Peter A. Kreckel, RPh is a most unique breed of community pharmacist. He currently serves as the Director of Clinical Services at Nickman’s Drug Store, a five-store chain in southwestern Pennsylvania. Pete has also been recognized as the Pennsylvania Pharmacist Preceptor of the Year in both 2012 and 2019. He also received the National Community Pharmacy Association’s Preceptor of the Year Award in 2014. In 2015, he was honored by his alma mater with the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. He has precepted 65 students from the area’s schools of pharmacy.
